The Philippine military is one of the most powerful in the entire Southeast Asia region, with millions of soldiers on its active roster and an impressive arsenal at its disposal. Despite this, many Filipinos underestimate the prowess of their nation’s military. The Philippines may not have the greatest military in the world, but its armed forces are not to be underestimated either. The military has undergone extensive modernizations in recent years and boasts advanced hardware that gives it an edge over its neighbors and potential adversaries alike, so don’t underestimate them because they aren’t in the top tier of military powers in the world today. Here’s why you shouldn’t take them lightly.

The Army
The Philippine army is a force to be reckoned with. Though there are few in numbers, they are fighting an uphill battle against terrorism and insurgency.
The Armed Forces of the Philippines, or AFP, is composed of three main branches: the Philippine Army, which provides ground and air forces; the Philippine Air Force, which provides air forces; and the Philippine Navy, which provides coastal defense. These military branches are led by a chief of staff who reports to a commander-in-chief currently President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. Defense Minister Delfin Lorenzana
also holds this position, making him both the minister of defense and head of the
armed forces.
Air Force
The air force of the Philippines is one of the most capable in Southeast Asia. It has a total of 12,000 active personnel and is composed of fighter jets, transport planes, helicopters, and unmanned aerial vehicles. The air force operates 44 combat aircrafts including 35 F-5 Freedom Fighters, six OV-10 Bronco fighters,
four C-130 Hercules transport planes and two UH-1 Huey helicopters.
They also have about 16 other support aircraft. These make up for roughly half of all their military equipment. And as if that weren't enough, they also have an
impressive fleet of 24 tactical combat helicopters including Bell AH-1 Cobra
attack Helicopters) which are used for reconnaissance and attack missions on land or at sea. The Philippine Air Force carries out its missions using 3 major
bases in Metro Manila, Clark Air Base in Angeles City, Pampanga and
Villamor Air Base near Manila. In addition to those bases, it is supported by 10 satellite airfields.
Navy
The Philippine Navy is one of the four branches of service, as well as one of three service branches of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. Established on March 17, 1897 by General Emilio Aguinaldo and Commodore John P. Nicholson, it is one of the oldest naval forces in Southeast Asia. The Philippine Navy is part of a larger navy organization that includes other components such as Marine Corps and Coast Guard. It operates both ships, aircraft, and coastal defense artillery to protect the country from seaborne threats. Its missions include patrolling territorial waters; safeguarding maritime trade; tackling transnational crime at sea; conducting humanitarian and disaster response operations; assisting government agencies in marine scientific research; among others.
The Philippine Navy has become more aggressive under President Rodrigo Duterte. Under his leadership, new warship designs have been commissioned for construction.
Marines
The Philippines has a Special Operations Group called the Philippine Marines, who are trained to take on any situation. The Marines have a long and distinguished history that dates back to 1909. They have been involved in all of the major conflicts in recent history, including fighting against Japanese forces during World War II. In addition, they were deployed by the United States in Iraq from 2003-2004 and
Afghanistan from 2002-2014. The Marine Corps is one of only three marine
infantry units in Asia that can conduct amphibious operations, which means they are able to launch attacks from the sea onto land targets. Their motto is Boldly we steer because they believe no matter what happens, they will always be prepared for it and will never shy away from an obstacle.Their capability as marines but also their specialized skill sets that allow them to do other jobs in case of emergencies.
The People's Army
The Philippines' army, numbering about 125,000 active-duty personnel.
It is one of Asia's largest. With a volunteer force comprising more than 40%
of its total ranks, it has the highest proportion of conscripts among developing countries. The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) are divided into three major services: ground forces (army), navy and air force. The AFP is also assisted by two paramilitary forces: the Civilian Home Defense Forces and the Auxiliary Volunteer Forces. As a result of these reforms, the AFP have shifted their operational focus to external defense and deterrence, using an active defense strategy which falls between minimum means of self-defense and preventive war.
To complement these efforts against terrorism in Mindanao, President Benigno Aquino III signed Executive Order No. 10 giving full authority to the military, under certain conditions and within certain limits, to arrest those involved in or suspected of committing terrorist activities. For this purpose, the security forces may conduct searches without warrants if there is sufficient evidence that search will lead to discovery of evidence related to terrorism or if the person being searched objects and refuses inspection. Furthermore, with regards to detention during investigation periods prior to prosecution; any civilian arrested for committing acts of terror shall be detained only at designated places such as police station jails and other similar places.
