The Golden Ratio
It's believed to be the most aesthetically pleasing ratio ever discovered. In art, architecture and fashion design, the golden ratio is usually represented by this symbol: φ. It's a single line with a longer segment attached to it that makes an angle of about 137 degrees. The Golden Ratio is used in everything from the pyramids at Giza to your favorite pair of skinny jeans because, according to some researchers, humans find proportions that are close to 1:1.618 more attractive than other ratios. These proportions are said to create feelings of stability and harmony in our minds and bodies. When you see someone walking down the street who looks taller and leaner than average, there's a good chance they're built using these proportions. It's even possible to measure out how much space we take up on any given chair (called perching) using these measurements.
Draping
There are three main types of draping techniques used in fashion design. These are the fold, the draped, and the slip. The first technique is fold draping, where you take a rectangle of fabric and lay it on a dress form or person to see how it falls. This makes it easier to make seams in the correct places so that they will fall correctly when worn by someone. Draped draping involves laying out two pieces of cloth on top of each other and pinning them together. The third type, slip draping, is similar to the other two except that you need only one piece of cloth which is folded in half lengthwise then laid out flat like an open book with one side slightly overlapping the other side. The overlapped part should be at the center back. You can now trace around the inside edge of your crease to draw your pattern for cutting.
Grading
In fashion, math is used in many ways, from grading patterns to calculating fabric yardage. Pattern Grading is the process of adjusting the size of a pattern so that it fits different body sizes. To grade a pattern, you must first know your own measurements. You will then compare them to the measurements on the pattern envelope or on a size chart. Once you have determined how much needs to be added or taken away, use a straight edge and marking tool such as chalk or tailor’s tacks to mark where you need to cut. Cut the excess material with scissors along the markings, which are called Grading Lines. The entire piece should now fit better. You can also add length or width by simply adding another line at either end of the graded line. Fabric Yardage: It may seem like we throw yards and yards of fabric into our sewing machines every day, but there are some formulas to help keep things running smoothly when working with large amounts of fabric.
Patternmaking
1. Patternmaking is the design process of drafting a pattern for a garment, either by hand or on a computerized drawing board. It's an important step in creating clothes because it ensures that all pieces of fabric will fit together well when cut out. Patternmakers draw geometric shapes on paper or on computer-aided design (CAD) systems, then use those shapes to create templates for the cloth parts. The most basic patternmaking method involves three steps: cutting two mirror images of the shape from paper; pinning one half over the other; and tracing around it with a pencil. More complicated patterns might require at least twelve shapes for things like pockets and collars. Drafting: 2. Drafting is the act or art of producing drawings, typically technical drawings, in order to represent construction plans.
Sewing
A person who sews clothes needs to know how to measure fabric, what the width of the fabric is, how much yardage they need, and how much more they need. This knowledge of math is essential because in order to make a shirt that doesn't look too long or short, someone must know their measurements.
